COURAGE for the future | Exhibition at UNI:Lokal
On April 26, a new exhibition will open at UNI:Lokal: Under the title "COURAGE for the Future," the research network MUT from the Department of Architecture - Urban Planning - Landscape Planning (ASL) will present innovative materials and technologies that provide answers to current and future challenges facing the construction industry. Until June 15, interested parties can visit the exhibition free of charge at Wilhelmsstraße 21.
The exhibition "COURAGE for the Future" is curated by the research network MUT - Material and Technology of the ASL department, which develops and researches new materials and technologies, offering solutions to challenges such as climate change, population growth, the energy transition, and resource scarcity in the construction industry.
The exhibition explores the strategic use of renewable resources such as willow, bamboo, clay, mycelium, and algae in design processes, showcasing their intrinsic versatility and ecological resonance. It also focuses on material customization and design for growth, extensive research into material properties, and novel methods of computational material simulations. Additionally, the exhibition highlights bottom-up design approaches derived from the inherent characteristics of materials, informing innovative building design strategies.
Various examples are presented, ranging from concrete facades as electricity-producing solar panels to robotic winding processes for material-efficient lightweight components made from veneer wood and an endless thread made from willow wood for architecture, construction, product design, and vehicle construction.
The MUT research network - Material and Technology is interdisciplinary and addresses the fundamental question: How do we conceptually, design, plan, build, and shape architecture and space sustainably for the future? It involves the departments of Experimental and Digital Design and Construction | Prof. Phikipp Eversmann, Structural Design, Design, and Building Construction | Prof. Julian Lienhardt, as well as Fine Arts | Research Platform BUILD ART INVENT | Prof. Heike Klussmann.

Clay and Steel for Innovative Building Constructions
15 minutes with Hilke Manot and Mobin Moussavi (Department of Structural Design in the Department of Architecture - Urban Planning - Landscape Planning)
The lecture presents the potential of recyclable materials such as clay and steel for innovative building constructions developed in two research projects. "FerrumLutum" reinterprets historical vaulted ceilings and constructs a ceiling system with minimal ecological footprint using clay and steel, which can replace conventional reinforced concrete ceilings in future construction. Steel is also central to the research project "S3 - Sustainable structural skin," which uses the material for lightweight constructions. The developed steel structural elements are both high-performance and resource-efficient.

SolarChip - How Concrete Facades Turn into Electricity-Producing Solar Collectors
15 minutes with Frederik Ecke (Department of Fine Arts | Research Platform Build Art Invent in the Department of Architecture - Urban Planning - Landscape Planning)
The research platform BUILD ART INVENT develops facade elements in collaboration with the Helmholtz Center Berlin for Materials and Energy and four industrial partners capable of accommodating solar modules of various types and generations – including future, as yet unknown generations.
